DIARY OF THE DEAD

(MA15+, 95mins) Madman

As a zombie virus rages across the world, a bunch of film students take flight in a Winnebago and film the calamity that follows. After forty years of zombie carnage, you'd think horror maestro George Romero would have had enough. Instead, he obviously feels the need for some self-reflection. Soon he's throwing tomatoes in all directions, expressing dismay at our obsession with violent images and venting despair at the popularity of handy cams. And though all this may seem a little incongruous in a comedy for meat lovers, Romero's "film within a film" analysis is hardly the stuff of Marshall McLuhan, and as quick as you can say "Aaargh!!", he's back to the business at hand and killing zombies. Extras: loads.
